Building the Future of Bearcats Baseball

As our travel program continues to grow, BGRA has evolved its leadership structure to better support our coaches, strengthen player development, and provide greater consistency across every age level. In advance of the 2027 season, we are excited to introduce this collaborative leadership team designed to provide a consistent experience for our players and families, while creating a clear player development pathway from 8U through 14U.

Bringing together experienced coaches with specialized areas of focus, this leadership team works collaboratively to support coaches, promote consistent instruction, and help every Bearcats player reach their full potential.

Together, this leadership team supports:

  • Coach development and mentorship
  • Consistent player development across every age level
  • Age-specific baseball instruction
  • Coaching education and certifications
  • Program standards and organizational consistency

Bill Bochenek

Executive Travel Director

Serving as the Executive Travel Director, Bill provides overall leadership for the Bearcats Travel Baseball program by establishing the program's vision, supporting coaches, coordinating the leadership team, and ensuring a consistent experience for every player and family. In partnership with the Age Group Directors and Player Development Director, he helps ensure organizational alignment, consistent communication, and a unified approach to player and coach development across the program.

A lifelong member of the Buffalo Grove baseball community, with a connection to BGRA that spans decades, Bill played baseball from the age of four through adulthood, including four years at Buffalo Grove High School before continuing to play locally into his twenties.

For more than ten years, Bill has coached within the BGRA organization, primarily at the 13U and 14U levels, helping players prepare for the transition into high school baseball. His coaching philosophy centers on mastering fundamentals, developing advanced baseball knowledge, and recognizing that every player learns differently. By building relationships and understanding each player's unique strengths and motivations, Bill creates an environment built on accountability, growth, and honest communication.

Russ Goldstein

8U & 9U Age Group Director

Working to establish the developmental foundation for the youngest players in the Bearcats program, Russ collaboratively works to support our Bearcat coaches, promoting consistent instruction and positive player experiences throughout the 8U and 9U age levels. His goal is to help young players develop strong baseball fundamentals, baseball IQ, teamwork, confidence, accountability, and a genuine love for the game that will serve as the foundation for future success throughout the Bearcats program.

Although Russ's athletic background began in wrestling and track and field, he has dedicated more than two decades to coaching youth athletics. Since joining BGRA in 2006, he has coached at virtually every level of the organization, serving as both a Bearcats head coach and assistant, while also coaching football, basketball, and baseball throughout the Buffalo Grove community.

Russ believes successful player development begins with patience, positivity, and structured progression. His practices are designed to build one skill upon another while creating an environment where players feel confident learning through repetition. He emphasizes recognizing success, celebrating effort, and making baseball both enjoyable and challenging.

Nate Alvarado

10U, 11U, & 12U Age Group Director

By supporting coaches and player development during one of the most important stages of a young athlete's baseball journey, Nate helps ensure consistency in coaching, player expectations, and program philosophy across the middle age groups. His passion extends well beyond wins and losses with a belief that athletics provide an opportunity to shape character, resilience, and leadership while preparing young athletes for success both on and off the field.

Originally from Kahalu'u, Hawaii, Nate pitched at Kailua High School before continuing his collegiate career at Trinity International University. He has spent more than fifteen years coaching travel baseball, beginning as one of the original Bearcats coaches when BGRA launched its travel program in 2010. Since then, he has led successful teams within the Bearcats, Bruins, and other travel organizations while also coaching football at the youth and high school levels.

Nate's coaching philosophy is rooted in preparation, accountability, and mental toughness. He believes players develop confidence by mastering the controllable aspects of the game—effort, attitude, and attention to detail. One principle that defines his coaching is the Hawaiian word Imua, meaning "forward," reminding players to continue growing regardless of success or failure.

Tom McGovern

13U & 14U Age Group Director

Helping prepare players for the transition into high school baseball, Tom supports our Bearcat coaches while ensuring players receive consistent instruction and are prepared for the increased expectations of advanced competition. His goal is to prepare players not only for high school baseball, but also for the challenges they will encounter throughout life by teaching perseverance, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for the game.

A product of the BGRA travel program himself, Tom grew up playing Bearcats baseball before continuing his playing career at Stevenson High School and remaining active in competitive adult baseball. His coaching experience includes more than a decade within the Bearcats program, as well as coaching positions at Tremper High School, Highland Park High School, and currently Glenbrook North High School.

Tom believes coaching extends far beyond teaching baseball skills. His philosophy emphasizes developing the complete athlete by combining physical skill development with mental resilience, confidence, leadership, and personal accountability. He works to build strong relationships with players while fostering a team culture based on trust, communication, and continual improvement.

Nelson Gord

BGRA Player Development & Operations Director

In effort to establish a consistent player development framework across the BGRA landscape (supporting both our travel and recreational players), Nelson partners with the Executive Travel Director, Age Group Directors, and BGRA leadership to drive the organization's player development model, curriculum, and certification standards. His focus is to provide insight and resources to ensure players experience consistent instruction, age-appropriate skill progression, and a shared coaching philosophy throughout the organization. His vision is for every player—regardless of team or age level—to experience a consistent pathway for growth both on and off the field.

A product of the BGRA program beforebecoming standout player at Buffalo Grove High School and the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), Nelson went on to play professionally from 2004 to 2007, earning Northern League All-Star honors and demonstrating his versatility by playing all nine defensive positions during his professional career. His coaching and leadership experience spans more than twenty years, including high school & collegiate coaching, professional scouting, USA Baseball, coach education, and helping more than 400 players advance to collegiate baseball.

Nelson believes youth baseball is ultimately about developing young people. While competition matters, his focus is creating fundamentally sound players who think the game, compete with character, and become outstanding teammates. He emphasizes accountability, confidence, communication, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning.
